Before the Knitwear: Choosing Yarn and Texture

Before the Knitwear: Choosing Yarn and Texture

Before a knitted piece takes shape, there is a process of exploration.

Choosing a yarn is about more than color or composition. It is about discovering how a fibre behaves, how a stitch catches the light, and how different textures change the character of a piece.

This is why I create small knitting swatches before developing a design. Each little square is an experiment, a way to test stitches, compare textures and understand how the yarn will look and feel when knitted.

Some ideas work immediately. Others require a different stitch, a different tension or a completely different yarn.

These small samples may seem insignificant, but they are where every design begins to find its identity.

Before there is a garment, there is a texture waiting to be discovered.
